4th annual Amanda’s Race 5k Walk/Run

May 20, 2017 8:00 am - May 20, 2017 1:00 pm

December 25, 2011 started as any other Christmas for Amanda Bissette Batchelor. Tragically, her life changed forever early that afternoon. Just after leaving her mother’s home to visit family members, the truck in which Amanda was traveling was struck by a vehicle that ran a stop sign. Amanda was critically injured and unconscious. She was airlifted from the scene and spent the next few week in Intensive Care at Vidant Medical Center, where she underwent 4 different surgeries. On January 17, she was stable enough to be transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia. As the premier rehabilitation hospital in the nation, the doctors there see the multitude of patient. Amanda stood out among these patient and amazed doctors with her will to fight. She continued rehabilitation at Shepherd and was finally able to return home on Mother’s Day of 2012.

As a quadriplegic, Amanda has been able to continue finding ways to enjoy life. By grasping a stylus or other objects in her hands, Amanda has learned to use shoulder movement to operate her wheelchair, use a smartphone, mix brownies, and even paint! And through it all, she is able to keep a positive attitude. She is such an inspiration to so many people; this is the reason we want to help.

Amanda’s Race is being organized to help with some of Amanda’s expenses. Unable to receive government assistance, Amanda is responsible for providing for her own ongoing medical care and treatment. Her quadriplegia also warrants the use of much costly equipment to help further her rehabilitation. In addition, more surgeries are need on her arms so that she can continue to use her wheelchair, paint, and do the other things that she loves.

We hope you will continue helping!
