Ingredients
- 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp paprika (optional)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- (optional) green onions for garnishing
Instructions
1. Preheat and prep
Preheat the oven to 375°F and grease a baking dish.
2. Make the sauce
Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute, then stir in the flour and cook for another minute to form a roux.
3. Add liquids
Slowly whisk in the milk and cream. Cook until the sauce thickens, about 3–5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
4. Layer the potatoes
Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour some sauce over them. Repeat the layers until all of the potatoes and sauce are used.
5. Add the cheese
Sprinkle the cheese between layers or on top.
6. Bake
Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake another 25–30 minutes until golden and tender.
7. Rest and serve
Let sit for 10–15 minutes before serving so the sauce thickens. Sprinkle with green onions, serve and enjoy!
